Plant Love Stories: To All the Plants I Loved Before

Some of the greatest love stories are captured in books or movies. But for the plant parent community, we experience a type of love that isn’t depicted on screen. So in honor of Valentine’s Day, we compiled some love stories between plant and plant owners, and who knows? You might actually relate to these tales this time.

First Love

You never forget your first love. Before I began my plant collection, a good friend of mine gifted me a gorgeous 3-in-1 Philodendron Birkin for my birthday. I had no idea how to take care of plants, but thankfully this plant was fairly low maintenance. I placed it by my window because it needed indirect sunlight, and before I knew it, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of it. Whenever work got stressful, I would tend to my plant or bask in its beauty. Now I have a whole collection of indoor plants all over my house. But my little Philodendron Birkin still sits in its spot by my window.

Love at First Sight

I told myself I wouldn’t buy another plant, but that was before I saw her. She was an adorable, healthy, Fiddle Leaf Bambino that I knew I needed to take home the minute I laid my eyes on her. I don’t know if I was drawn to her miniature size (she’s so cute!) or her perfectly-shaped, lush, green leaves, but something about this plant screamed: mine. It truly was love at first sight.

Hopeless Crush

Tall, dark, and mysterious. That’s how I like to describe my Burgundy Rubber Tree. Ever since I brought it home, I can’t stop staring at it. My friends and family all agree that he’s a showstopper. I mean with big, strong, dark leaves like that, who can resist?

P.S. I Still Love You

For months, my Monstera Adansonii was my favorite plant. It was one of the first plants in my collection and I was in love with it. I purchased it for its unique heart-shaped foliage and holes that resembled Swiss cheese. Every week or so, I would get a dose of happiness whenever my plant would sprout a new leaf or climb up the stake. Now that my plant collection is growing, my full attention isn't on my Monstera Adansonii. But I root for her from the sidelines whenever I see her thriving!

The One That Got Away

I once had a Tineke Rubber Plant—a gorgeous plant with hues of light green, cream, and splashes of pink. When I bought it at the shop, the lady said I needed to repot it soon because the pot was too small for its roots to grow. But then I got busy and forgot to transfer my plant to its new home, which caused its roots to suffocate. I also didn’t notice the sun was shining directly on its leaves, which caused it to burn. I was reckless and caught up with the busyness of life that I didn’t realize how much I neglected my Tineke until I lost it…
